JBtheGamer's Thoughts On: Total War: WARHAMMER

A little while back I picked up Total War: WARHAMMER during a Steam sale. I was pretty excited to get my hands on this game and check it out. I have had a love/hate relationship with Creative Assembly's Total War series. Now a Total War series based on the WARHAMMER franchise, this is a game I could get really into. The reason I didn't pick it up when it released because at the time I had so many other games to play. So during one of the Steam sales, I finally decided to pick it up.

I wasn't put off by all the DLC the game has to offer, in fact, some of the DLC was free and I downloaded those right away. It does kind of suck that the Chaos forces are locked behind DLC, but that didn't really bother me all that much. So I jumped into the game and started off with the Campaign. I went with the Dwarfs because they had some of the more advanced technologies of war. I figured it would be interesting to play with cannons and rifle infantry. Things were going well so far. Got to play a few of the battles before being presented with the tactical map. I really like the strategic gameplay of the battles. Enjoying how you move your armies around into the best positions to defeat your enemies on the field. But once I got to playing around on the tactical map is where things got boring for me pretty fast. I didn't like the turn-based tactical base and army building. After conquering some territory and struggling to keep my people happy. I soon discovered I rather just play the battles then the campaign. So that is what I did. I stopped any progress of the campaign and just started to play the custom and quest battles.

This was rather disappointing to me. I heard so much about the campaign and watched some Let's Plays on it and thought it was something I could get into. But I was wrong, the campaign felt too much like a Civilization game and I am not into those. Even if the campaign was a bust to me, the battles themselves are really where the meat and potatoes are in Total War: WARHAMMER. Each race feels unique and interesting. And getting close up to the fighting is a real treat to see as the action unfolds before you.

The only gripe, other than the boring campaign, was the battles take so long to load. I know it can't be my computer because other modern games load pretty fast. For whatever reason Total War: WARHAMMER battles take forever to load.

Overall I wouldn't say Total War: WARHAMMER is a bad game, it really isn't. But if the battles seem more of your speed and the tactical campaign isn't. I would highly suggest waiting for the game to go on sale before picking it up. Unless you are into the full package, it really isn't worth the price they are asking for.  At some point in the future, I'll pick up the sequel as I heard the campaign has improved. I also really like playing out the battles with the WARHAMMER races and want to check out some of the new races they added in the sequel.
